What is a brooder hen?

A brooder hen is as near natural chick rearing as you can get, the unit is mini heat plate that faces down towards the chicks and warms them as the mother hen would do. When the chicks feel warm enough they will come out to feed and drink and wander back under when they want to warm up or feel more safe. The brooder hen is also built on 4 legs and you can raise it as the chicks grow, so they can always keep near the heat source as they grow.

There are many advantages to this over heat lamps the two main one are it costs much less to run as the heating in much more efficent and that chicks get more used to day and night light, rather than the heat lamp being on 24hrs a day.

The downside is the chick number need to be kept to 20-25 per brooder hen where as you can possibly get 50-70 per heat lamp.{modal http://www.youtube.com/embed/AF4EXaj2Keg|width=425|height=325|title=What Is A Brooder Hen?} Watch the Video{/modal}
